I’d say this is the end of an era, but let’s be honest, XDefiant wasn’t around long enough to have had a lasting impression on the wider industry. It’s a shame for those who enjoyed Ubisoft’s branded first-person shooter, but it has finally happened – XDefiant has been taken offline forever.
In December 2024, Ubisoft revealed the end of the road for XDefiant, the beleaguered first-person shooter that never gained traction beyond launch. It was confirmed that June 3 would be the date that the firm pulled the plug on XDefiant, and guess what? That day has finally come.
Farewell
In December, XDefiant’s Executive Producer, Mark Rubin, said:
I am, of course, heartbroken to have to be writing this post. Yes, this game has been a personal passion for me for years and yes, I know that not all challenges lead to victory, but I also want to recognize all of the developers who are being affected by this closure.
Each and every one of them is a real person with a real life separate from our own and they have all put so much of their own passion into making this game. And I hope that they can be proud of what they did achieve. I know that I will always be proud and grateful to have worked with such a great team! A team that really punched above its weight class.
It’s never good to see a game die a death, but the potential for XDefiant fizzled out so fast. The esports ecosystem for the game was never realised, development changes were skewed, and the player base fell off at such a dizzying speed, it felt unnatural.
I wasn’t displeased with XDefiant. I thought it was a good enough shooter with great pacing, and I enjoyed the abilities given to the players by aligning with one faction or another. It helped that I was genuinely very good at XDefiant, which made me want to play it every so often at least.
In the end, Ubisoft just released all the planned content that had been prepared at that point and sat back, preparing to press the big, red button to take XDefiant offline for good.
