Xbox Wants Starfield To Be As Popular As Skyrim 12 Years From Now

During his appearance on stage at CCXP 23 in Brazil, Phil Spencer spoke at length about Xbox in the past, present, and future tense, dipping in and out of almost every topic native to the platform. From Minecraft to Forza and from Sea of Thieves to Game Pass, Spencer covered countless topics while being probed by the interviewer in front of a crowd of thousands of Brazilian gamers.

When the conversation turned to Starfield, Phil Spencer revealed Xbox’s ‘plan’ for the epic space-based RPG, stressing a lofty goal that could either be branded ambitious or delusional.


That’s Our Goal

Put simply, Phil Spencer and his team believe that Starfield will be as popular as Skyrim is now, 12 years from now. In case you need a little context for that statement, Skyrim currently boasts more players on Steam than Starfield does, and it launched in 2011.

Well, at Xbox, that’s the goal. As a question, the interviewer at CCXP asked, ‘You talked about Skyrim… 12 years after Skyrim came out, people are still playing it. Do you see the same thing happening with Starfield?’

And to that, Phil said:

That’s our goal. Skyrim is such an amazing hit from Bethesda Game Studios, and talking to Todd Howard and the team, really what they wanted to do, is people who love space and space exploration, is give them that same opportunity. So, we’ve already announced that we’ve got our next expansion coming – Shattered Space -, we’ve already told the community that they’ll get all the mod tools, so they can go and create their own content in Starfield, which has been so important to Skyrim. So, a ton of confidence that for many, many years, Starfield will be sitting very high in the gameplay.

Recently, we revealed that Starfield’s player count is slipping, edging close to Fallout 4 and, of course, Skyrim on Steam. That’s despite the game reportedly attracting 12 million players in the space of just two months.
