Xbox head Phil Spencer recently spoke at this year’s Gamescom event to talk about the future of this generation of Xbox and whether or not the company is planning a mid-gen refresh.
Speaking to Eurogamer on the topic of mid-gen refreshes, the Xbox boss said, ” As soon as you start doing mid-gen refreshes, you’ve got a bunch of issues in front of developers, on what platform they target. And it starts to feel a lot more like PC – which is clearly a good ecosystem that’s healthy, but then I’m like, ‘Okay, well, what’s the difference then between console and PC, if we’re in this mode of every two years, a new GPU comes out, or CPU?”
The reiteration comes following Spencer’s comments in June that he doesn’t think a new Xbox Series X is needed.
Meanwhile, on the PlayStation side, it seems like the company is doing all it can to bring its consumers new products throughout the current generation. Yesterday, the company officially announced its new PlayStation Portal for $199.99.
In addition, Insider Gaming understands that PlayStation is planning a new PlayStation 5 refresh sporting a detachable disc drive. The new console was further corroberated by Microsoft’s themselves in the ongoing legal battles over its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Earlier this year, I reported exclusively via my other website, Key to Gaming, that PlayStation is planning a mid-generation refresh called the PlayStation 5 Pro, which is currently codenamed Trinity. It’s understood that the console is targeting a holiday 2024 release.
As for when the new PlayStation 5 console is to be announced remains to be seen, Insider Gaming has seen internal documents that suggest that the console will be released in September 2023, so an announcement should be imminent.
