Helen Chiang, the first XBOX Chief Operating Officer, is leaving Microsoft after 21 years, following a three-month tenure in her newly created role. This news was first reported by Tom Warren of The Verge.
This is the latest shake-up from Microsoft’s gaming Wing in a year that has seen the company refocus and restructure ahead of the launch of next-generation XBOX hardware, codenamed Project Helix.
XBOX Reorganizes Leadership as COO Helen Chiang Exits

Asha Sharma officially announced the news in an internal memo that The Verge obtained. In the brief memo, Sharma wishes Chiang well and says other XBOX leaders will split her responsibilities for the time being.
Helen Chiang is leaving Microsoft today. I’m grateful for her years of service and wish her well. As Chiang is departing today, her immediate responsibilities are being split up between other Xbox leaders for now. We’ll share more on COO leadership as plans are finalized.
A representative for XBOX later told the outlet they don’t discuss “individual personnel matters,” but wished her well.
Since Phil Spencer retired and Asha Sharma was appointed CEO of XBOX, the organization has undergone a major reset, resulting in numerous layoffs and shake-ups across game studios, as well as shifts in its philosophy on key business areas such as console exclusivity for game releases. XBOX remains confident that it will return to profitability in fiscal year 2027.
