XBOX Addresses Discs Failing During Network Outages

A new statement from XBOX CTO reveals that the company is rolling out a fix for disc games not working during outages.

Recently, Xbox experienced a significant outage that affected its online services, rendering many features unusable and preventing downloaded games from launching. The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) addressed the situation at the time, stating, “This is an unacceptable situation.” He has now also commented on the issues with game discs that occurred during the outages.

XBOX Rolling Out a Fix for Discs to Keep Working During Outages

In a statement to The Verge, Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet addressed the issues concerning physical discs during the recent outage. He first acknowledged reports from players who claimed they were unable to access their disc-based games during this time. Van Vliet explained that the console performs entitlement checks for disc-based games, but emphasized that these checks “should not prevent players from accessing their games, and this is by design.”

Vilet mentioned that Xbox has identified an issue affecting some consoles’ ability to access “saved entitlements during outages.” These saved entitlements are designed to allow players to run their disc-based games even during outages. Xbox plans to release a fix to address this issue, which will be included in an upcoming update. For those curious, entitlements refer to the digital rights licenses for the content on the disc.
