EXCLUSIVE: Watch Dogs: Legion ‘Director’s Cut’ Planned For First Half of 2027

If you weren’t a fan of Watch Dogs: Legion, you certainly weren’t alone. Many consider Legion to have been an almighty nail in the coffin of the series that was once created to ‘rival’ Grand Theft Auto. It emerged to a woeful reception and never really gained much traction, to the point where, even today, earlier iterations of the Watch Dogs franchise are way more popular on most platforms.

But, bizarrely, that’s not all she wrote for Watch Dogs: Legion. Earlier this year, our very own Tom Henderson revealed that Ubisoft is working on a ‘director’s cut’ of Watch Dogs: Legion; a remake of sorts that serves as a stab at bringing the game back to life, however reluctantly.

We can now reveal when that game is planned to be released.

Will You Give Legion a Second Chance?

I’ll be honest – I quite enjoyed Watch Dogs: Legion. It was a pretty buggy title that had little depth, but it recreated a near-future rendition of London with alarming authenticity, and the hacker-tech-driven core of the Watch Dogs experience was front and centre.

Admittedly, it had a superb premise.

In a downtrodden, oppressed city, anyone can become an ally. You can recruit any NPC imaginable to your cause, even those who are initially aligned against you. You can bring on board old ladies, politicians, cab drivers, students, office workers, and absolutely anyone in between, and it makes for some entertaining circumstances.

Pair that with a nostalgia boost by including some characters like Aiden Pierce and Watch Dogs 2’s Wrench, and you’ve got a formula that should have landed well with fans, but sadly, it didn’t.

Next year, in the first half of 2027, Ubisoft plans to release a director’s cut of Watch Dogs: Legion, revisiting London and giving the game a second pass.

Honestly, it might not be such a bad idea. The love for Watch Dogs is still there, and Watch Dogs 2’s player count has recently skyrocketed on Steam out of nowhere.

Imagine this:

GTA 6 has been on the market for five or six months, and those interested only in the single-player experience finished the story weeks ago, if not longer. They’re hungry for an open-world, urban experience filled with crime, combat, and car chases, and lo and behold, Ubisoft re-releases Watch Dogs: Legion, packed with improvements and perhaps a little extra content.

It’s not… the worst idea in the world. It’s no big secret that Watch Dogs is one of the best games like Grand Theft Auto, but Legion never earned the flowers it could have, had it been implemented and delivered properly.

I’ll certainly be going back, but, as I said, I kind of enjoyed Watch Dogs: Legion. And recently, Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s CEO, said nothing else is coming for Watch Dogs right now. But they’ve got around 100 developers at Ubisoft Montreal working on Watch Dogs: Legion, so, I don’t know, that sounds like something.

Would you be going back to London in Watch Dogs: Legion for a second try (or first)? Let us know your thoughts on the Insider Gaming Discord server.
