Upcoming Fable Game Delayed Internally, It’s Claimed

The upcoming Fable game from Xbox has reportedly been delayed internally. However, that does not necessarily mean that the game won’t release in 2026.

The Fable franchise was once a staple of Microsoft’s early Xbox days. 25 years later, a Fable reboot is on the way, with a 2026 release. However, a new claim suggests that the game may have been pushed back internally. Largely, this is because the team behind the upcoming release is concerned about the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, due out in November of this year.

Fable’s Reported Internal Delay at Xbox

Jeff Grubb recently noted that he’s heard claims of the game being delayed internally. However, according to him, Microsoft still has plans to release Fable in 2026. The game could potentially target a launch in the final month of the year.

“Apparently, they’re still trying to get it out this year, but they are worried about the launch of GTA 6. And so if it’s getting delayed beyond the release of GTA 6, that could push it into December, which might make it a prime candidate to get delayed into 2027,” said Grubb.

The game was recently showcased during the January Xbox Developer Direct. That is when Playground Games announced that the game was planned for 2026. At the time, it was noted that the title would be released on PC and Xbox Series Consoles in Autumn 2026. They could technically release it in the first three weeks of December and still claim that the release window is accurate.

Long Road to Fable’s Release

The game was originally announced in 2020. However, players had to wait until 2023 to see a trailer debut. It was then slated for release in 2025, but was deleted early in that year and rescheduled for 2026. Then-Xbox Studios boss Craig Duncan claimed the title would be worth the wait.

Asha Sharma recently took the reins at Xbox following the retirement of Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond’s subsequent resignation. She believes the brand’s return to prominence starts with video games. Read her comments here.
