XBOX Announces Two New Cloud Gaming Options

The “This is an XBOX” mantra continues on, this time with two new options reportedly being tested out for the brand’s Cloud Gaming service. Already a robust offering of streaming options, XBOX Cloud Gaming has been compatible with multiple gamepads (including a PS4 DualShock) and with multiple devices, such as phones, tablets, PCs, and more.

Now, XBOX seems primed to add a couple more ways to enjoy their Cloud Gaming platform.

More Ways to Play Via XBOX Cloud Gaming

XBOX Nano Controller for XBOX Cloud Gaming

Revealed today via XBOX Wire, the first of two new XBOX Cloud Gaming options includes simply connecting your compatible smartphone to a supported Smart TV. The list of Smart TV options is, admittedly, not staggering, but still includes many popular models like Amazon Fire, LG, Samsung, and certain VIDAA OS-Powered units.

With the correct television, you’re now able to download the XBOX app and toggle on “Preview Features” in your account settings. When launching the app without a controller connected, the XBOX Smart TV app is supposed to then prompt you to use your phone (Android or iOS) as a controller, and away you go.

I personally have a compatible Smart TV and phone, yet I was not getting this prompt when testing myself. However, XBOX Wire mentioned this feature is “rolling out” today, so perhaps the update hasn’t reached me yet. Regardless, being able to simply connect and use a smartphone to stream games on TV is a nice lowering of the barrier to entry for XBOX Cloud Gaming.

The other new option revealed today for XBOX Cloud Gaming is connecting the new XBOX Nano Controller ($49.99) to your device of choice via the same WiFi network that you are streaming from.

In theory, this seems like a great streaming setup, given that the Nano controller is literally pocket-sized. This should mean your options for Cloud Gaming situations are now more extensive than ever.
