Marathon developers released a major update on the game’s future, revealing a roadmap of what’s coming from October to March 2027.
The developers have been working on player feedback and have acknowledged that some new players find the game difficult, while experienced players want to hear more about it. As a result, they have taken steps to evolve Marathon, with updates planned for October 2026, December 2026, and March 2027.
Marathon Will be Evolving Beyond an Extraction Shooter
The developers understand that Marathon’s PvEvP pressure may not suit everyone, and some players prefer a more casual experience with the couple of hours they have to spare. There are other types of players as well: some might want a challenge, some may want to test a build, or some want to fight only with players, and the dev team eventually wants to support all types of players.
Hence, the developers are working towards connected PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences, with different levels of intensity, more options for solos and crews, making the game more approachable for new players, and new experiences that focus on cooperation, competition, and high-risk survival. But the core PvEvP experience will also remain.
The developers are also rethinking how Runners interact with their Cradle to help provide more freedom towards shell’s progression, capabilities, and its specialized role. The devs are also creating new combatants designed to challenge players’ cooperation skills. The devs are also building a new zone that will push players “deeper into the unknown”; more details will be revealed later.
October Brings Marathon’s Nightfall Refresh
The Marathon Nightfall Refresh will arrive in early October, and it will be a focused update “designed to improve the current experience”. All the new stuff will arrive in December’s Symbiosis update.
Marathon’s Symbiosis Update Brings a Dedicated PvE Experience, Bishop Shell and More
December is when things really start changing for Marathon with the Symbiosis update, as players get a dedicated PvE experience where they can “explore, experiment, and take on challenges,” without the pressure of other hunters.
The update will also introduce an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, which has been described as offering “a more direct, lower-commitment way to sharpen your skills and compete without putting a full run at risk.”
A brand new shell called Bishop will be introduced, who is a high-performance samurai. The shell has been described as a “fast, surgical hunter-killer built around speed, surprise, and devastating bursts of melee damage.”
Marathon’s March Update Will Be the Evolution of the Game
The biggest changes to the game will arrive in 2027, with Marathon’s March update bringing an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences, a new onboarding experience, a refactored Cradle and deeper shell progression, more focused questlines and narrative, new alien combatants, and an entirely new zone.
