A new report reveals Tencent purchased a 15.75% stake in Arrowhead Games Studios last year.
Tencent Invests in Arrowhead Game Studios
According to a report by Swedish website Dagens Industri (via Breakit), Tencent purchased 15.75% of Arrowhead’s shares in July 2024 for approximately USD 83 million, with the Helldivers 2 developer valued at SEK 5.1 billion (USD 532 million approx). The report also provides us with some new figures for Arrowhead, with the company reporting a turnover of SEK 959 million (USD 100 million) and an operating profit of SEK 729 million (USD 76 million).
Johan Pilestedt, Arrowhead Studios’ Chief Creative Officer and co-founder, has also commented on the recent Tencent investment. Pliestedt has stated that this partnership will provide the company with more opportunities in the Chinese market. He added, “Chinese player base is the holy grail in the gaming industry.” (via Google Translate)
Helldivers 2 launched to enormous success in 2024, breaking Steam and sales records, selling 12 million units in 12 weeks. The CCO recently stated that the game has brought in around “2.5 million players every week.” Also, Arrowhead has confirmed that their next game will be free from a PlayStation partnership.
On the other hand, Ubisoft recently formed a new subsidiary with Tencent, which was valued at approximately 4 billion euros ($4.3 billion). Tencent purchased a 25% stake in the subsidiary for €1.16 billion. The subsidiary features popular IPs like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six.
