Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead have announced that its next game will be free from a PlayStation partnership, meaning the game will likely be a multi-platform/console release.
The news was announced on Discord (thanks Forbes), where Arrowhead Shams Jorjani announced:
“The wonderful thing is that thanks to the amazing support of you FINE people Arrowhead’s future is quite bright and we have the freedom to explore some really cool concepts that we couldn’t have otherwise. Game 6 (our next project) will happen the way it will happen thanks to you. ❤️”
“The next game is 100% funded by ourselves so we’ll call 100% of those shots.”
It means that Arrowhead are now in full control on its next game and not reliant on publisher funding, which in the case of PlayStation would have meant that Helldivers 2 would be exclusive to the PlayStation platform for consoles.
While it doesn’t 100% necessarily mean that Arrowhead will release on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, as a deal could potentially come further down the line, it gives Arrowhead those choices to decide what’s best for business.
When asked about if there was anything negative about working with PlayStation, Jorjani replied:
“No way. Playstation are great. there would be no Helldivers if it wasn’t for them. We’re open to working with them again in the future. they are incredibly game/dev oriented. solid partners. and this is me just saying it like it is. not blowing smoke up their asses.”
As for what Arrowhead could be working on next is unclear, but Arrowhead has had a history of working on various different games and genres, so the possibilities are some what endless.
What do you think Arrowhead will work on next? Are you glad that they are no longer tied to PlayStation? Let me know what you think about the game now on the Insider Gaming forum.
