Supermassive Games Announces More Layoffs, Delays Directive 8020 to 2026

Supermassive Games has released a statement regarding a new round of layoffs, which will affect 36 of their colleagues and delay the release of Directive 8020.

Supermassive Games’ latest statement on X (formerly Twitter) addresses the new layoffs. The developer addresses how challenging it has been to navigate the industry and to adapt to the constant changes, and they have made a difficult decision to “begin a redundancy process”. In this new round of layoffs, the Little Nightmares 3 developer expects to lose up to 36 of their employees.

The statement added that they remain focused on their upcoming projects and delivering the best to their community. Supermassive Games will be pushing the launch of Directive 8020 to 2026, which was previously planned for October 2025. This additional time will help them fine-tune and refine the game to the point that it becomes “the very best experience” for the fans. Moreover, the development of Little Nightmares 3 has not been impacted by the new round of Supermassive layoffs.

You can check out the full statement from Supermassive Games, below.

In other news, our exclusive report from April 2025 revealed that an unannounced Blade Runner game was cancelled at Supermassive Games. Additionally, the developer laid off up to 30% of its staff at the start of last year. What are your thoughts on the new Supermassive layoffs and the delay of Directive 8020 to 2026? Supermassive Games’ Full Statement On Layoffs:

The games industry remains a challenging and ever-evolving environment. As we adapt our team structure to better align with these changes, we’ve had to make the very difficult decision to begin a redundancy consultation process where we anticipate losing up to 36 of our colleagues.

This decision was not taken lightly, and we know this will be an incredibly difficult time for everyone. Our absolute priority will be to offer full support to all those affected.

We remain focused on our upcoming projects and have made the decision to move the launch of Directive 8020 to the first half of 2026. The response to the game so far has been fantastic, and this additional time will help us deliver the very best experience for our fans. We’re deeply grateful for the patience and support of our community.

There is no impact on the development of Little Nightmares III.
