In May 2023, South Korean developer Wonder People shut down Super People, an ambitious battle royale title, citing a dwindling number of users as the root cause for the game’s closure. On June 19, that failed title comes back to life, with Wonder People attempting to take another stab at longevity in the battle royale space.
In a press release officially confirming the return of Super People, it was stressed that a closed beta test will be held exclusively on Steam next month. Wonder People reportedly plans to ‘build on the initial success of the original version’ with this new, upgraded version of the game.
Super People, Again
Super People wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t all that memorable either. It mimicked titles like Fortnite and PUBG, but it fused player characters with superpowers and upgradeable abilities that could evolve as a match unravelled. This meant that you could gain incredible weapons, super speed, or immense skills to take down opponents.
Here’s the spiel from the press release that revealed the upcoming closed beta test:
In Super People, players control a super-soldier armed with powerful weapons and abilities in battle against other super-soldiers. Their mission? To survive until they are the last ones standing.
Fourteen classes of Super Soldiers are available for players to choose from to suit their preferred combat strategy. Unleash a relentless torrent of high-caliber fury as the Gatling Soldier, shredding through defenses and overwhelming enemies with a seemingly endless barrage of bullets.
Up close and personal is where the Shotgun Master reigns supreme. Delivering devastating bursts of close-range power, this class excels at clearing tight spaces and punishing those who dare to get too close. For those who prefer to deliver lethal strikes from a distance, the Sniper class is the unseen apex predator of the battlefield.
The release reported that a whopping 4.3 million people played Super People when it first came out – and I was one of those early adopters. It was released at a time when battle royales were taking off, and everything from Warzone to Apex Legends was booming – but Super People failed to gain traction.
The director of Super People, Hur Min, said:
The Wonder People team has been hard at work enhancing the overall player experience, addressing and implementing user feedback. Notable changes include introducing a jury system to combat cheating, adjustments to character and weapon balance, and adding a new resurrection skill to open up strategy in battle even more.
Efforts have also been made to streamline the onboarding process for new players and get them right into the action.
