Steam Achievements Overhaul Now Available in Beta

A new update has arrived in Steam Beta, overhauling the platform’s Achievements system and adding new Achievement Sets.

Steam has recognized that games live longer thanks to DLCs and expansions, and while that’s great for gamers, it can sometimes mess up the platform’s achievement tracking and even remove players from completion status. Hence, the DLCs will no longer impact 100% completion, and the achievements have been compartmentalized into new ‘Achievement Sets’.

Steam Beta Introduces Achievement Sets

Achievement Sets is a new system that has arrived with Steam Beta and is now available for a select set of games. With the new system, developers can compartmentalize a game’s achievements into different sets and define each one’s purpose. For example, a game could have different sets for single-player, multiplayer, DLC, and more.

The new system doesn’t change how you earn achievements; you still earn them by playing the game. What’s changed is the viewing experience, with the long list now segregated into different sets with their own progress bar. Players will also earn a new “set complete” trophy when they unlock every achievement in a set. With new DLCs and expansions, developers can add new achievement sets specific to that content without affecting players’ progress.

Base Game and DLC Achievement Sets

Steam has revealed different achievement sets: Base Game and DLC. Base game sets can be earned by playing the game, and this progress is shown in blue on the page. You can only access DLC achievement sets when you purchase that content; progress for these sets is shown in purple.

Steam’s New System Can Also Feature Seasonal Achievements

The new system also lets developers add temporary sets for season-based games or time-limited holiday achievements. Once that time period is over, the developers can archive this set, and only the users who have unlocked the achievements or the set can showcase it on their profile.

Steam Also Gets an Updated Achievements Page

The overhaul also adds an updated Achievements page on Steam, accessible from the Games List on the web and from games in your Steam Library. The updated page will now display a summary of the player’s overall progress, the progress for each achievement set of that game, and details on individual achievements. Players can also toggle Global Stats or per-achievement completion rates on the same page.

Additionally, Search has been expanded with new filters for achievement sets and for locked or unlocked achievements. Players will also be able to compare their game progress with up to three friends, including rare achievements, completed sets, and DLC sets. Along with all of these changes, there are some other enhancements as well:

  • The Perfect Games tab is now called Completed and expands to show both completed games and games with completed achievement sets.
  • Games with completed achievement sets can now be added to the Completionist Showcase, in addition to completed games.
  • Games played via Family Sharing are now displayed in the Games List.
  • Friends with playtime in a game through Family Sharing are now eligible for friend comparison.
  • Store and Library game pages will now show if a game has achievement sets.
