Undead Labs Ending Support For State of Decay 2 To Focus on Sequel

Undead Labs has confirmed that later this year, it’ll end developer support for State of Decay 2, pivoting to focus maximum attention on State of Decay 3. In a post published on stateofdecay.com, it was confirmed that a final content update will drop later this year, permanently unlocking content that was previously locked behind some kind of gate.

The team has reassured users that it won’t be sunsetting State of Decay 2 or taking it offline, but following Update 38 later this year, no more updates will follow.

Ending The Apocalypse

State of Decay 2 was released in 2018, landing to a positive reception and expanding on everything that made the first game so universally appreciated. In State of Decay 2, players were given enormous sandbox environments to survive in, charging them with living out their wildest post-apocalyptic fantasies while building and managing a community and base.

In my opinion, it’s one of the best zombie games of all time.

State of Decay 3 has been a long time coming, with the team publishing very little in the way of teasers or other content updates over the years. Recently, a fresh trailer was released, giving us the best look we’ve had so far of the sequel, which Undead Labs said will now be the sole focus of the team.

We know you love this world we’ve created and the amazing community you’ve helped build. While you’ve enjoyed State of Decay 2 for many years, you may have heard that we are also hard at work on the next evolution of the franchise! Our ambition is to make the greatest zombie survival sim in the franchise, and to do so, we’ll be shifting our focus and resources to making the upcoming third installment, State of Decay 3.

It’s important to note that this is a total shutdown of the support services for State of Decay 2. Even if bugs are recognised by players after the final update has been deployed, Undead Labs will not accept bug reports. It was further confirmed that the game will remain available as part of the Game Pass subscription service.

Are you sad to see an end to State of Decay 2, or are you looking forward to State of Decay 3?
