Star Citizen, the MMO from Cloud Imperium Games, has reached $1 billion in funding. This comes over a decade after the game was first announced in 2012.
The game reached over $2 million in an initial Kickstarter campaign, and the developers continue to crowdfund, having now surpassed $1 billion. However, the game was originally targeting a 2014 release, and nearly 12 years later, it still doesn’t have a solid release date, even though they’re targeting a hopeful 2026 launch.

In an interview with Variety, Chris Roberts, the game’s designer, expressed how much fan support means to him. He highlighted that this support has been crucial in keeping the project moving forward. He pointed out that a major game publisher or private equity funding would not have allowed for the patience and time necessary for the creative process they are pursuing. He is also targeting a game with a similar trajectory to World of Warcraft, which has cultivated communities that have persisted for decades.
“People just want to see the biggest, best world possible, and they love the idea of the dream. And as we’re going along and they see more of it, it reinforces itself, basically. I fully believe that we’ve still got a long time, even after we’ve got what we call 1.0 out, and we’re not considering an alpha anymore, that we’ll be adding and building on the universe and the world, and it will be a place for people to adventure together, meet up together, and have fun together. Not too different than, say, ‘World of Warcraft,’ which has been going on for 20-plus years after it released.”
In addition to the multiplayer aspect of the game, there’s also Squadron 42. Squadron 42 is a cinematic single-player experience set in the Star Citizen universe, and according to the official website, it’s targeting a 2026 release.
