In 2023, Sea of Stars came out as a massive surprise to the year’s gaming slate, culminating in taking home the prize of Best Independent Game at the year’s The Game Awards, alongside a nomination for Best Role Playing Game, which it conceded to Baldur’s Gate 3.
Considering the success and acclaim of Sea of Stars from critics and players alike, whatever Sabotage Studio is working on next will more than likely be one to keep on your radar. Based on reports from the team themselves, their next title post-Sea of Stars is currently cooking.
Sea of Stars Team is Working on “Project Sparrow”

In a post on Sabotage Studio’s self-operated LinkedIn account earlier today, the team announced that they are celebrating ten years in the game development business, which spans their careers launching both 2023’s Sea of Stars and its DLC, as well as The Messenger, their debut title that also nabbed a couple of The Game Awards nominations in 2018. It seems we may hear more soon about what they have coming next.

For now, all we know about Sabotage’s next adventure is the working title, “Project Sparrow,” which doesn’t give much room for speculation at this time. However, simply based on the pedigree of everything the team has worked on prior, there’s little doubt that whatever this game ends up being, it’ll likely be another potential contender come time for awards when it releases.
What may be safe to assume is that whatever Project Sparrow is, it likely could be a retro-inspired modern twist on a beloved genre brimming with charm and style, at least if previous titles are any clue. Sea of Stars is a turn-based (J)RPG with tons of Chrono Trigger DNA, while The Messenger is a side-scrolling action title harkening back to the Ninja Gaiden’s of old. Both previous games sit in the upper 80s on OpenCritic, immediately making Project Sparrow one to keep tabs on moving forward.
