Ritual Tides is one of the most hotly anticipated horror games around, and during Insider Gaming’s 28 Games Later Showcase, the team at Vertpaint revealed an all-new trailer for this chilling title.
This psychological horror has been turning heads for months, mostly because it takes on a Silent Hill-style approach to the macabre. It’s a gorgeous, dark survival shooter with intense visuals and a mysterious narrative, and as you might have seen during the 28 Games Later Showcase, it looks absolutely terrifying.
What is Ritual Tides?
Ritual Tides is the beginning of a brand-new psychological horror saga, and it plunges players into a harrowing experience that tests their fears on a remote Victorian island off the coast of Cornwall. It’s kind of Lovecraftian, features immense, mutated enemies, and threatens to take advantage of inherent, common phobias to procure the strongest feelings of dread from players.
It’s a semi-open-world first-person title with survival and exploration elements, puzzles to solve, and secrets to uncover. Visually, Ritual Tides is glorious, and it promises to rival the likes of Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
Key Features of Ritual Tides
- Original, Inspired Setting: Vertpaint has designed a location that’s local to them, so the geography, foliage, textures, and set pieces are all deeply authentic, adding to the immersion.
- Survival Gameplay: Ammunition and resources are not plentiful in Ritual Tides, and not every fight will be winnable. You might need to turn tail and run from some engagements, but will you manage to escape?
- Nightmarish Creatures: Ritual Tides takes Lovecraftian inspiration when it comes to some of the enemies you encounter, along with introducing hulking spiders, terrifying old ladies, and a fleshy mass known simply as ‘Agnes’.
- First-Person Inertia: The game’s first-person movement mechanics are deeply realistic, with the team at Vertpaint having created a dynamic procedural traversal system that makes moving around the rocky, rural landscape of Hortus an immersive, heart-pounding, and at times complex experience.

The Studio Behind Ritual Tides
Vertpaint is a British studio represented by a wealth of AAA talent, including high-level leadership folks with backgrounds at studios like Rockstar Games. The team has spent time working as a support studio, working alongside various top-tier developers and publishers to help bring their games to life, but Ritual Tides represents their first original game.
