After hinting at a mobile version of VALORANT for years, Riot has finally confirmed its imminent arrival, by opening pre-registration in China. Riot is partnering with the developer of PUBG Mobile to bring their tac-shooter to a much bigger audience.
Riot and PUBG Mobile Developer LightSpeed Are Working on VALORANT Mobile in China
Riot Games announced via today that VALORANT Mobile is coming to China first, via a pre-registration period for the next playtest coming soon. “China has one of the largest and most competitive mobile FPS communities in the world, and since LightSpeed is already a trusted developer in the region, we think it makes sense to start more locally,” said Anna Donlon, the VALORANT studio head at Riot.
Riot says its been working with LightSpeed through numerous playtests in China, featuring “some of the best mobile FPS players in the world.” LightSpeed Studios, a developer under the same Tencent parent company that owns Riot Games, developed PUBG Mobile, one of the highest grossing and most played mobile games ever with its own thriving esports scene. The company also developed mobile versions of popular games like Final Fantasy XIV and Apex Legends.
With VALORANT soon to be arriving on mobile, it will be one of the few mainstream FPS titles to have a platform on PC, console, and mobile. The mobile platform as a whole has the potential to be the most lucrative, especially in regions like China and Southeast Asia. Two of the most played mobile titles in the world are mobile versions of mainstream shooters: PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty: Mobile.
