April 2025 saw Borderlands 4’s projected release date get pushed up. This is a refreshing twist on the usual delay announcement most games are subjected to. However, as one door opens, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has had to answer another concerning the possibility of a 2025 GTA 6 release date.
Borderlands 4 is no longer releasing on September 23—it’s now September 12. This means you can get your hands on Gearbox’s latest adventure 11 days earlier than intended. Of course, this is great news for Borderlands fans who are eager for more bazillions of guns.
But because Gearbox is owned by Take-Two Interactive—who also own Rockstar Games—this has fueled rumors that this was done to clear space for GTA 6.
Borderlands 4 Release Date Could Mean GTA 6 is Coming in 2025

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has addressed the Borderlands 4 release date change in greater detail: “Borderlands 4 shipping early is 100% the result of confidence in the game and development trajectory backed by actual tasks and bug find/fix rates. Our decision is literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date.“
If GTA 6 is released in 2025, it’s likely in October. We’re still waiting on Trailer 2, and hoping for news sooner rather than later. With Borderlands 4 now coming out on September 12, this would give players nearly two weeks extra to play it.

Is this because Gearbox and 2K are nice? Or because it means you can play Borderlands 4, have it finished, and be ready for GTA 6?
Randy says it’s because Borderlands 4 is ready earlier than expected, but the gaming community has other ideas. Let us know what you think in our Insider Gaming forum, and subscribe to our free weekly newsletter for the newest GTA 6 and general gaming news.
