Sony has said that it doesn’t intend to sell its hardware at a significant loss as PS6 rumors continue to swirl that the console could cost $1000+.
The news comes following a rumor last week that the PlayStation 6 currently costs around $960 in materials.
PS6 Won’t be Sold at a Significant Loss
The news came during Sony’s latest Q&A session, where Sony was asked to provide an update on their current plan around hardware pricing and profitability.
In response, CEO, Hideaki Nishino, said, “First, we regard hardware as the base for providing the gaming experience, and by offering products such as the PlayStation Portal Remote Player (PS Portal), we aim to provide experiences tailored to users’ play styles beyond the living room, which has traditionally been considered the primary usage environment.”
He continued,
“As for pricing, it is not realistic for us to absorb all component cost increases, and we have already implemented some price increases outside Japan. At present, however, sales are proceeding as planned, and we do not believe this has led to a decline in customer demand.
“As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses. At the same time, we are carefully monitoring the market and continuing to evaluate our approach. We believe it is important for us to make every effort to ensure that customers fully understand the value we provide in relation to pricing.”
Traditionally, PlayStation has subsidized its console prices by a couple of hundred dollars in the hopes of flooding the market with consoles and making profits on software; however, it seems like the current RAM situation has made that unfeasible.
According to rumors, the PS6 is currently planning to launch in 2027 – a date that Insider Gaming could not verify.
That being said, hardware prices are expected to continue to rise, with some analysts predicting that the prices are going to double again in the coming months. So, at the moment, $1000 for the PS6 could be somewhat optimistic and could be a lot higher.

Sounds like they will be continuing to monitor the market, but definitely not going to be subsidizing anymore. It’s about value. So long as the PS6 provides the value to meet customer needs vs demand, they won’t be selling at a total loss. It’s going to be interesting to see how all this plays out for sure!
Yeah $1000 seems likely also $80-100 games. Problem is people keep buying in look at GTA 6 preorders or PS5 sales when there were no games same with the Pro.
By the time next year gets here, $1000 will be a good deal at the rate we are going at now. Sonys going to have another price increase in the next few months when there RAM supply runs out, most likely in september/october… before GTA 6 lol
What’s the point of buying a console when it won’t be subsidized? Just buy a gaming PC. It is far more useful and open, far larger selection of games + mods, it is upgradeable and adjustable to your budget. A couple of exclusives you will forget in a few months after playing, isn’t worth losing all the advantages.
