New sales data show that PS5’s lifetime US sales through year 7 are beating PS3 and PS4, while XBOX Series falls behind XBOX 360 and XBOX One.
PS5 has been one of the top-selling consoles of the current generation, being at the very top since its release and has only gained proper competition since the arrival of Nintendo’s Switch 2; however, it has still been providing a good battle. Players have now been informed about its performance against the previous gen in the United States.
PS5 Outsells Previous Gen at Same Point, While Xbox Series Falls Behind
A recent post on BlueSky by Mat Piscatella from Circana provides an update on lifetime sales comparisons for the PS5, PS4, and PS3. According to the post, as of the 71st month of sales, the PS5 has sold 40% more units than the PS3 and is 1% ahead of the PS4, indicating strong interest in the console. However, when comparing year-to-date sales for year seven (from January to September 2026), the PS5’s performance is 4% lower than the PS3’s in 2012 and 3% lower than the PS4’s in 2019.

The situation looks different when we examine the sales of XBOX Series consoles. Comparing their total sales through the first 71 months, the XBOX Series consoles are trailing by 35% compared to the XBOX 360 and by 28% compared to the XBOX One. The gap is even more significant in the seventh calendar year, as XBOX Series sales from January to September 2026 are 81% lower than the XBOX 360’s sales in 2011 and 45% lower than the XBOX One’s sales in 2019.
