Pokémon Go has issued a special reward to all players to celebrate the game’s landmark 10th anniversary, with Mewtwo distributed as part of the celebrations.
The hit from Scopely went viral upon release in 2016, ushering in a new era of the Pokémon craze, and has remained strong in the decade since with regular content updates and events.
To celebrate the landmark, Pokémon Go players around the world have been issued with one of the most iconic Pokémon of all-time, Mewtwo.
Pokémon Go Hands Out Free Mewtwo
As revealed on the official website, players in Pokémon Go “will be able to enjoy a free Timed Research” that leads to an encounter with the Legendary Kanto Pokémon.
Additionally, the Mewtwo encountered from completing the Timed Research has maxed-out stats and a special background, while Mewtwo caught from the research will also have the third Mega Level unlocked for Mega Mewtwo Y.
The event has now rolled out worldwide, but players have a limited time to complete the Timed Research, as all rewards must be claimed before Sunday, September 6 at 11:59 PM local time.
A free Mewtwo distribution follows on from July’s in-person event at Times Square, where lucky attendees caught a Mewtwo with a special background, and there has been some criticism that the event was not accessible remotely.
The 10th anniversary distribution combats that, however, as it’s been added that anyone who caught a Mewtwo at the Times Square event will receive a Mewtwo with different stats and different rewards.
Additionally, it was also confirmed that Mewtwo with a Times Square background “will be available again at some point in the future.”
