PlayStation Will Use AI and Machine Learning to Speed up Game Development

In a new Sony Corporate Report, Sony has revealed that PlayStation will use AI and machine learning to speed up its game development.

On page 16 of the report, Sony had that “bolstering technologies that can help creators engage in maximizing the value of their IP in efficient, high-quality ways, including sensing and capturing as well as real-time 3D processing, AI, and machine learning,” and that these technologies will help to deliver its IP “rapidly and at low cost to a broader range of fans.”

The report reveals that PlayStation used machine learning in the production of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 by applying voice-recognition software in certain languages. This process allowed the company to automatically synchronize subtitles with each character’s lines to “significantly shortening the subtitling process.”

Sony also revealed that it is building its Volumetric Capture Studio, which generates 3D data from people and locations to render high-quality images. They said, “Going forward, we plan to apply high-quality 3D assets, including motion data from our Studio, accumulated by each of our companies cross-functionally across the Group, and explore potential external sales.”

They continued, “In real-time 3D processing, we are pursuing exploratory activities with Epic Games, focused on the Unreal Engine, developed as a physics engine for game CG generation. For instance, we reused 3DCG components from a music video shot using virtual production to produce a game set in the same world and released a proof-of-concept CG-based short film using the Unreal Engine.”

AI and machine learning have been a hot topic in the industry in recent years around plagiarism, creativity, and the cause of reduntencies and with PlayStation getting more on board with its possibilities, those conversations are surely set to continue.

  • Bad move this will lead to studio walkouts. It shows why devs need a union and it’s probably coming multiple studios are doing this so be prepared for a game dev strike. Worse under Jim Ryan studio head quelled this back and now look at what’s happening it’s not going to go over we’ll Insomniac for sure will face trouble they never got what they asked for.

  • Sony is full of it I hope all the shills and ponies stand against them on this if not expose them! Devs need to stand up to this and not just Sony and EA it’s all of them and they’re not treated right, paid well, or offered benefits that should always be offered not to mention they’re told to promote morales in their games yet the companies telling them won’t do the same and treat employees with the same respect.

  • it seems like some people are idiots in the comments here🙄
every gaming company is using AI in some way, that is the future for god’s sake,
I’ve no problem with it so long it only helps to develop games faster so we don’t have to wait five to six years!!! for new games! and it doesn’t affect the jobs of the employers then I’m okay.

  • Workers stick together walk out together and stop this not just Sony everyone needs to unionize and protest until all companies refuse to use AI

  • Microsoft is also the first publisher to approve the unionization at multiple studios they own starting this year.
Not saying they are perfect; they have had a shit load of layoffs this year too.
But they are actually on the right path right now.

  • Fanboys this isn’t a console warrior thing it’s a criticism of the industry and it should not be accepted get out of your Xbox vs PlayStation brain rot mindset. AI is bad and it hurts the already undervalued, under paid, work horse developers who have no job security or union they don’t even have medical benefits and face toxic environments on a daily basis. No one changed after Activision, Ubisoft has it, Sony has it, WB Games has it, Embracer, CD Projekt, and all of Japan and China but you don’t care you just stan for a company that doesn’t care and would happily screw you over no matter whom that may be. Don’t support Sony or any of them stand by the employees need I remind you of all the sexual assault lawsuits they sweep under the rug, the crunch hours, and the mistreatment that’s downright inhumane! Sony should pay for medical, food, lifestyle needs, mental, and housing of employees as well as relocate all studios to California to make networking easier.

  • You ponies are why we get garbage from Sony you defend them at every turn it’s why the prices go up because you cover for them enjoy paying $800 for a console and $100 for live service games with in game purchases bet Sony knows with you they can get away with it should they raise game prices. I say charge $1000 for the console with no disc drive and then $100 for games and $500 for a disc drive that needs a WiFi connection to work you idiots will buy it and make a Portal pro I know you’d pay $600 for that.
