The PlayStation 4 Pro was released just three years after the original PS4, and now with the PlayStation 5 entering its third year of release, fans have begun to speculate if the PlayStation 5 Pro is on the horizon.
Unfortunately, not many of us have the opportunity to ask Sony such a question directly, but the Japanese magazine Famitsu did just that. The magazine had the opportunity to sit down with Hideaki Nishino, SIE Platform Experience SVP, to talk about the PSVR2 and the future of the PlayStation platform.
Nishino gave an exciting response following the observation from Famitsu that the PS4 Pro was released three years after the original launch, which is where the PlayStation 5 is at now in its cycle.
Nishino said, “By the end of fiscal 2022, cumulative sales will exceed 37 million units, and we believe that it will be a very important time for the platform as well. I hope you will look forward to next year (2023).”
Although somewhat of a vague response (as to be expected), Nishino does hint that the platform will be getting an update in 2023.
Earlier this year, Insider Gaming exclusively reported that Sony is planning on releasing a new PlayStation 5 in 2023. It’s understood that this new console will have a detachable disc drive, which will reduce manufacturing and shipping costs, but give consumers the opportunity to buy the console without the disc drive if they desire.
Understandably, the report received criticism online as Sony already ships a Digital-only and disc version anyway. It’s believed this new console is to produce one console only, with the detachable disc drive being connected to the PlayStation 5 using an extra USB-C port on the back of the console. It’s unclear if the current digital PlayStation 5’s will be compatible with the disc drive or not.
This new PlayStation 5 console will completely replace the original and digital PS5s by the end of 2023.
Of course, Nishino could be referring to something entirely different here, but Insider Gaming sources are yet to confirm the production and testing of a PlayStation 5 Pro.
Sources have said that Sony’s goal at the moment is to ship as many PlayStation 5s as possible, with 30 million consoles planned to ship in FY23.

I know you meant it’s the third year it’s been released, but having come out in late 2020, it’s meaningless to talk about a third year. The PS5 just turned 2, so stop rushing please.
On another note, all this hardware talk is pointless when there is simply not enough software to warrant a purchase outright. If this is going to be a big year for PS5, it has to be because of the games. They’ve had such sales performance because of the shortages which made people buy one as soon as they could, but now millions of people are realizing they bought it for basically 5 games or so.
Και καλύτερα γραφικά. Το συναρπαστικό και όμορφο παιχνίδι είναι πιο ωραίο απο ένα απλό άρα δεν είναι και τζάμπα που το πήραν κάποιοι.
How about Socom!?!? The game that made Multiplayer for Sony PlayStation so big it is now. How can Sony not care or forget a game that made PlayStation so big and help it evolve. Not to mention you have so many people asking for any Socom, a new one or even just a Remake of Socom with all the favorite maps
SOCOM was a recruiter tool.
I have a PS4/PS5 disk drive on my PS5. But hopefully this new drive or new drive will do as expected and be compatible to disks 1,2,& 3 as well. I’ve been a faithful PlayStation player since the beginning! Counting on Sony once again!
You will be disappointed if your hoping for true backwards compatibility anything close to XBOX. Sony doesn’t care about backwards compatibility nd never will because they have so many studios making great exclusives. Microsoft uses backwards compatibility as a selling point to compete because they don’t have a lot of great exclusives.
I’d like to see someone ask about the douchebag move of releasing HFW DLC PS5 only!
Not sure where you guys are but here in Italy, unless you are prepared to spend up to double the list price on a bundle, they are still very hard to find. So articles like these just make me laugh.
I love get my kids Rey way see what see tell think bout it tell answer big game poeple both girls
I’m excited for the PS5 pro but wont be any rush to get it cause i just finally got my hands on an original disc PS5 last month after looking for 2 years
Hopefully it doesn’t look like a shifty wifi router that only 12 year olds enjoy looking at.
Ps5 with more storage as standard would be great. !!!
Why would people want a PS5 pro when they might have just gotten one so Sony stop rushing with the PS5 pro release. Why would Sony release a PS5 pro after people have been excited to having them for just over a week.
