PGL Astana 2026 Playoff Preview: Who Will Take the Trophy?

PGL Astana 2026 moves on to its playoff stage at the Barys Arena following the conclusion of the Swiss Stage, with eight teams advancing to the playoffs. The last day of the Swiss Stage saw magic, G2, and Aurora complete the playoff bracket.

The playoff bracket for PGL Astana 2026 is:

  • MOUZ vs Aurora
  • Team Spirit vs G2
  • 9z vs magic
  • Furia vs Falcons

Spirit, Furia, MOUZ, and karrigan’s Falcons advance to the playoffs

Insider Gaming’s tournament guide for PGL Astana pointed to Team Spirit as the favourites for the event, and there is no reason to think otherwise after the Swiss Stage.

The Russian roster proceeded through the Swiss Stage with relative ease, dropping only one map across the three series, losing Overpass in overtime to Furia.

The team is by no means flawless in a general sense, expressing to the media that they are struggling to balance individual vs team play without their coach, Sergey ‘hally’ Shavaev. Yet, that balance had looked better since IEM Rio, making them favourites without Vitality present.

While Spirit’s 3-0 record was predictable, 9z’s 3-0 Swiss run was anything but. Wins against Parivision, Falcons, and MOUZ completed a legit showing from the South American roster, with strong showings from Luciano ‘luchov’ Herrera and Franco ‘dgt’ Garcia

Furia recovered from a last-place finish at BLAST Rivals Fort Worth to make the playoffs with a 3-1 record, finding comfort in Overpass yet again. The roster had specialized in the map at times last year, giving them an edge in their rivalry with Vitality, but it had since collapsed.

The rediscovery of both the map and Danil ‘molodoy’ Golubenko’s form will give fans hope that they can recapture their 2025 ways, but as with IEM Rio, the proof will be in the playoff pudding.

MOUZ also joined the playoffs with a 3-1 record in Dorian ‘xertioN’ Berman’s IGLing debut, combined with Adrian ‘xelex’ Vincze and Justinas ‘jL’ Lekavicius’s first showings.

MOUZ’s progress has largely been the xertioN show, with the entry IGL delivering huge impact, but can the player continue to have that impact in the playoffs? Historically, that hasn’t been the case.

Falcons advance to their first playoffs since the addition of Finn ‘karrigan’ Andersen in spite of the loss to 9z. Falcons by no means showed complete CS in the groups, winning messy brawls against k27, Monte, and The MongolZ.

Nevertheless, karrigan has always shown his best work in the arena, and if the vibes are good within the team, we might see that magic again in Astana.

magic will definitely be there, in fact, as hometown hero Abdurakhim ‘mo0N’ Issa and his team earned a spot in the playoffs in a surprising run which saw the team recover from 0-2 to 3-2 in the Swiss.

G2 joined the playoffs alongside magic on the last day of the Swiss after an unconvincing run. The roster is, in a sense, relatively new after the addition of Guy ‘NertZ’ Iluz, but their issues are not.

Aurora were the last team to qualify after a barnstormer series against The MongolZ, which saw the roster fight back on Overpass, before a Mirage that seemed to be slipping out of their hands, before a 2HP clutch from Ismailcan ‘XANTARES’ Dörtkardeş.

Parivision and The MongolZ miss out

Parivision was a team to watch at PGL Astana. The roster is one of the few teams to win a Tier 1 event, with their BLAST Bounty victory in January, but their PGL Bucharest exit showed that the roster’s high floor may be collapsing.

Parivision coach, Dastan ‘dastan’ Akbayev, had explicitly stated that the event was a goal for the roster, with the Kazakhstani coach hoping to play in the arena in front of his home crowd, but they could only guarantee a group stage exit.

Following elimination after losses to 9z, Aurora, and G2, dastan openly discussed the concept of changing the roster’s riflers on broadcast, looking at the young guns who had seemingly stepped up to Tier 1 seamlessly in January, but are now not adapting to the scrutiny that Tier 1 teams put their opponents under.

The coach put Andrey ‘BELCHONOKK’ Yasinskiy and Emil ‘nota’ Moskvitin in the spotlight in that broadcast interview, having previously liked a Telegram post from a fan who stated that nota should be kicked.

The major issue with The MongolZ in their current form is that they never seem to be in control of any particular match, or more accurately, never keep control.

The roster, at times, had Spirit, Falcons, and Aurora on the ropes, but their uncompromising playstyle means that each round is a roll of the dice in terms of their own aggression working or not. At PGL Astana, they were just shy of that balance going in their favour, but to no avail.
