One of the most popular websites for pirated Nintendo Switch games has been seized by the FBI.
According to a report by Kotaku, the FBI held a ‘law enforcement operation’ yesterday, where the popular Nintendo Switch piracy website, Nsw2u, was taken down. If you head to the website right now, you will see a new message titled “This Website Has Been Seized”. The message explains that this move was “in accordance with a seizure warrant issued pursuant to 18 U.S.C. 2323 issued by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.”
The law enforcement operation on the popular Nintendo Switch ROMs website was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and a Dutch agency called the Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD).
Nintendo’s Recent History with Piracy
Nintendo has been cracking down on websites and others that promote pirated content for a very long time. Early last year, we saw Nintendo assemble a lawsuit against Tropic Haze, the creator of Yuzu, a Switch emulator. It was alleged that one million copies of Tears of the Kingdom were downloaded illegally through Yuzu. The lawsuit was settled later, with the Yuzu creator paying $2.4 million in damages.
Moreover, late last year, we saw Nintendo bring the hammer down on Jesse ‘EveryGameGuru’ Keighin, who was streaming unreleased Switch games. The streamer was accused of ‘promoting and encouraging the downloading of pirated copies of unpublished games’. Nintendo was seeking $150,000 in damages for each infringement, which could add up to $7.5 million, per estimations.
