Nintendo Denies Claims of Favourable Switch 2 Pricing for Japanese Retailers

Nintendo has stated that the recent report about providing wholesale prices for the Switch 2 to Japanese retailers to improve its domestic placement is untrue.

Bloomberg posted a report yesterday stating that Nintendo will provide wholesale prices for the Switch 2’s distribution in Japan. These prices would allow the retailers to “make a gross margin of about 5%” instead of the industry standard of “roughly 2%.” This move was reportedly being made to provide “prominent placement” for the console across the country’s stores. However, Nintendo has recently denied the claim regarding favourable Switch 2 pricing for Japanese retailers.

The official NintendoCoLtd account on X (formerly Twitter) addressed the Switch 2’s pricing claims today. Their new post states that the “news report related to the wholesale price of Nintendo Switch 2 in the Japanese market” is “not true.” Nintendo added that the company does not share any details regarding “business conditions with distribution and retail partners.”

For those wondering, the Nintendo Switch 2 retails at $450 for most markets globally. There are two versions of the console sold in Japan. The first is Japanese/Domestic Use Only, which retails JP¥49,980 or $350. There’s also a multi-language version which costs JP¥69,980 or $490.

In other news, the Nintendo Switch 2 start-up screen has leaked ahead of launch, as the console is already in some people’s hands. The upcoming console also supports standard USB mice. What are your thoughts on Nintendo denying the claims of favourable Switch 2 pricing for Japanese retailers? Let us know below and join the official Insider Gaming forums discussion.
