New ZeniMax Online MMORPG Cancelled As Part Of Xbox Layoffs

The in-development MMORPG at ZeniMax Online Studios, codenamed “Project Blackbird” has been cancelled due to layoffs across Xbox by Microsoft.

The news first comes from Jason Schreier of Bloomberg.

“The new MMORPG project from Zenimax Online Studios, maker of Elder Scrolls Online, has been canceled as part of the Xbox layoffs, sources tell Bloomberg News,” he said. “The project, code-named Blackbird, had been in development since 2018.”

Project Blackbird is just the latest of game cancellations and cuts as part of the latest round of layoffs at Microsoft that will see roughly 9,000 people lose their jobs. Another game shutting down is Rare’s Everwild, which had been in development for roughly a decade.

More layoffs and game cancellations are expected to be known in the coming hours and days.
