A new report reveals that EA decided to shut down BioWare due to its decision to invest in Star Wars Battlefront 3 over Mass Effect.
For those unaware, some huge announcements arrived from Electronic Arts earlier this month and one of the most shocking ones was the cancellation of the next Mass Effect title and the closure of BioWare. Many players have wondered why the company made that decision, and now, the reason has been revealed.
Star Wars Battlefront 3 Was ‘Less Risky’ than Mass Effect for EA
A report from Bloomberg reveals that EA has two sci-fi action games in its portfolio that were costing the company hundreds of millions of dollars. The company decided that Star Wars was a safer bet, favoring Battlefront 3 over BioWare’s upcoming Mass Effect title. Interestingly, development on Battlefront 3 hasn’t even begun yet; however, the executives thought betting on Star Wars would be “less risky,” and they have usually been more comfortable with shooters than RPGs.

The report also discusses several reasons for the current situation, including the lackluster reception of the studio’s previous releases: Mass Effect Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Additionally, corporate policies may have influenced the outcome, particularly a leadership change that sidelined Laura Miele, who advocated for BioWare and the Mass Effect series while also overseeing EA’s studios.
