According to Naughty Dog’s new special Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II on YouTube, another chapter in the series is currently in the concept phase.
Neil Druckmann, a co-president at Naughty Dog, revealed at the end of the special that “there’s probably one more chapter to this story”.
However, Druckmann did not confirm any concrete details. At this time, Druckmann stated “I do have that concept that to me is as exciting as 1, as exciting as 2, is its own thing”.
Today’s big reveal during the making-of special also suggests that Naughty Dog’s next title will not be The Last of Us Part 3.
Naturally, Naughty Dog would need much more time to develop a game that’s still in the concept stage.
This lines up with recent statements from Jeffrey Pierce, the actor who voices Tommy. In December 2023, Pierce said The Last of Us Part 3 did not have a script yet.
In the meantime, fans will have to make do with The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered. The new version launched just last month.
Aside from various technical improvements, it includes the new ‘No Return’ mode. Naughty Dog accurately described it as “stressful”.
News about The Last of Us Part 3 should please fans who were disappointed after the multiplayer game was cancelled. It was originally titled The Last of Us Online.
Naughty Dog later explained that supporting it would require too many resources, “severely impacting development on future single-player games”.
The next chapter in The Last of Us sounds like it will take a fairly new direction. However, Neil Druckmann did confirm there would be a “throughline for all three”.
