Miyazaki Says FromSoftware Avoids a Fixed Game Formula

FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki says fixed rules can make games stale, so the studio pursues fresh ideas for every new project.

Of course, FromSoftware is known for Elden Ring, but that game is different from Bloodborne and Dark Souls. All of those franchises are different from The Duskbloods, the studio’s upcoming release exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. Now, Hidetaka Miyazaki is giving more insight into the studio’s approach to every game.

Miyazaki Says Fixed Rules Would Make FromSoftware Stale

In a recent interview with the Guardian, Hidetaka Miyazaki explained that FromSoftware avoids a fixed development mantra because strict rules can make its games conservative and stale.

The upcoming Nintendo exclusive draws inspiration from extraction shooters and tabletop games. Keeping the lines of creativity open keeps things interesting, the FromSoftware executive says.

“There’s no intentional FromSoftware [mantra] – ‘this is the way we make our games’ – because if you start to do that it becomes stale and conservative, and you start having to adhere to a set of rules and philosophies, and it just doesn’t become interesting, you can’t make anything that’s as fun,” Miyazaki says.

“So I feel like at least what’s worked for us philosophically is trying to adhere to what we find interesting first. I think that has created a good throughline through our games, and that’s what we concentrate on to [conceive] a new title.”

As of now, The Duskbloods has no release date. However, the game is slated for 2026. A network test was recently completed, during which players experienced the title for the first time.
