Shigeru Miyamoto comments on Princess Peach’s character growth in the Super Mario Bros. movie duology. Miyamoto is, of course, the creator of all of the characters in the Mario universe, but until she appeared on the big screen, Peach’s role has largely been reserved for being the damsel in distress that Mario has to save from Bowser.
In recent movies, Peach has taken on a much more confident role, playing more of a heroine than someone who needs rescuing. Shigeru Miyamoto is now discussing why the function required of the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom changes when crafting the story of a film.
Miyamoto Addresses Peach’s Shift From Damsel to Hero
In a recent interview with Japan’s Oricon, Miyamoto explained that the mindset going into the Super Mario Galaxy Movie in 2026 was different than even the mindsets surrounding Peach in the original Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023.
“Clarity is very important in games, and players need to be able to understand what they need to do immediately. That’s why the structure of ‘going to rescue the kidnapped princess’ has functioned as a kind of symbol.” He frankly stated, “I understood that there were criticisms that this didn’t fit with the current image of women. However, it’s also a part of the game’s mechanics that can’t be easily changed.”
He then switched his focus to discussing the filmmaking mindset: “We decided to make a bold change, and had many discussions with Chris and others. In the first film, we clearly presented the ‘fighting woman,’ but in the second film, we felt that wasn’t enough. By depicting Peach’s worries and emotions, and the fluctuations in her relationship with Mario, I think she became a richer character.”
The recent movie actually made a major change to Princess Peach’s lore. Those changes might carry over into future video games, as Miyamoto has previously commented. Check out those comments here.
