Shigeru Miyamoto believes he will keep the Princess Peach lore introduced in The Super Mario Galaxy movie as canon in future games.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was a massive leap from the 2023 film that saw Nintendo’s mascots hit the big screen courtesy of Illumination. This second film expanded on the Nintendo universe and introduced new lore for one of the franchise’s cornerstone characters. Now, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto says that he believes these new character details will remain in future Mario titles.
Shigeru Miyamoto Believes Princess Peach’s Backstory from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Will Stay
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie officially gave Princess Peach a backstory that she has lacked in the 40 years of Mario video games. The movie revealed that she and Princess Rosalina, first introduced in the Super Mario Galaxy video game in 2007, are sisters. Rosalina is Peach’s older sister in the film and is the one who sent her away to the Mushroom Kingdom for her protection. The sisters are also revealed to have been born of stardust, and when together, they can channel powerful energy to defend themselves. With this, it ties Peach and Rosalina together in a way no Nintendo media has before.
Speaking with Nintendo Dream, Miyamoto revealed that he had never given much thought to Peach’s backstory, but now, he looks forward to carrying the lore into future games.
“So, before making this movie, I hadn’t decided on the character’s background, but now that I’m making the movie, it’s become fun to expand on the character in various ways. Therefore, I would like to adhere as much as possible to the settings created in the movie in future games,” he said (via auto translation).
Nintendo still hasn’t announced what Mario’s next major adventure will be. Therefore, it remains to be seen how much Princess Peach will be changed moving forward. However, the Mario universe recently received another shocking plot change when Nintendo revealed that Mario and Princess Peach, often believed to be a couple, are just friends.
