Mixtape Developers Secured Music Licenses In Perpetuity

Beethoven & Dinosaur, the developers of the popular but polarizing Mixtape, discuss the game’s star-studded soundtrack and what they hope players take away from the game’s story.

The game’s soundtrack features Iggy Pop, the Smashing Pumpkins, Joy Division, DEVO, and more. In modern days, when a game features that much licensed music, there is a concern that it could one day be delisted from digital stores after the license expires. However, Beethoven & Dinosaur revealed that they paid extra to ensure that all licenses were kept in perpetuity, so the game can live on on digital platforms for years to come.

Mixtape Creative Director Hopes Players Are Inspired to Like Cool Stuff

Speaking with Kotaku, the game’s creative director, Johnny Galvatron, discussed the importance of the songs chosen for the game and his fear that he would burn out on some of his favorite songs by the end of the project. Thankfully for him, that wasn’t the case.

“My biggest hesitation was like, ‘if I make a game with all of my favorite songs, is it gonna be like starting a business with my friends? Am I gonna hate everything by the end?’ And no, I don’t,

Additionally, about what he wants the players to take away from this game, he admitted that he just hopes people find what they’re into because “liking shit is cool.” Also, he hopes DEVO is a major takeaway for players.

“Yeah, and get into it more and let them introduce you to weird shit,” Galvatron says. “That’s what I think is cool about these kids, and when I remember being that scene kid and selling tickets for bands and selling t-shirts for bands. I love that scene, it’s really positive, really art-centric. It sounds like a cliche, but those kids are really just about the music, that’s what they care about, and the scene and the art form, and those kids are cool.”

  • Yeah I dont understand all the drama over the game other than IGN giving it a 10 and Saros a 7… But I’m sure that was two different reviewers . Love to hear this about the music rights!
