Mass Effect: Universe Would Have Covered All Choices From Original Trilogy

More details have emerged about the canceled Mass Effect title following Electronic Arts’ closure of BioWare, with the latest details showcasing how in-depth the system would have been and its connection to the original trilogy.

EA announced the shutdown of BioWare last week, resulting in 400 job losses and the cancelation of work on the next entry in the Mass Effect series, which was revealed to be called Mass Effect: Universe by a leaked trailer.

Those who were working on the game have revealed key details about the format, which would have taken place after the events of the original trilogy, and it’s now been outlined how every choice from the original games would have been canon.

Mass Effect: Universe Made Every Choice From Original Trilogy Canon

Technical director Romain Toutain revealed the details on a livestream, via Kotaku and IGN, revealing that every possible choice from the original trilogy was woven into the game, and was behind the ‘Universe’ title.

“All the choices made in the first Mass Effect games were taken into account. One of the reasons why it was called ‘Mass Effect: Universe’ is that you had so many choices.

“You could plug your saves together to create parallel universes, to keep it simple. It’s not exactly how it worked. You had different timelines, basically.”

He later quipped that “you have no f**king idea just how great it was,” then explained the system further by adding: “It’s more like, you can make decisions that might contradict things you’ve already done or things you have to do, and so it would create plot ‘points’ in the timeline.

“I mean, that was the theory. It worked, in practice. I’ll tell you about the tech one day because it was really exciting.

“We got worked up, f**k. Everything in the game. Everything was stateful, and at any time, you could stop the game – I mean you could pause it – and ask a system that solved logical equations, ‘Is this valid?’ And if it isn’t valid, what conditions must be met for it to be valid?”
