Jason Blundell comments on PlayStation’s closure of Dark Outlaw Games.
On March 24, PlayStation announced it was shutting down Dark Outlaw Games. This came just one year after the studio was formed by former Call of Duty Zombies lead Jason Blundell. Blundell is now commenting on the Studio’s closure, noting that there’s no ill will towards Sony.
Fans Would’ve Been Excited About Dark Outlaw Games’ Project, Says Blundell
Jason Blundell appeared on Twitch with streamer JCBackfire, who was also a designer at the studio, to discuss the disappointing turn of events. During the stream, he noted that focus changes all the time in this line of work, but he feels confident in the project they were developing, which they claim wasn’t a live-service title.
“I can reassure you—and it’s been reassured to me—it’s just times change, focus changes, but the project we were doing and what we were doing, fans would have been very excited,” Blundell said (via Kotaku).
Backfire also said he’d been working in game development for 5 years, and that all that time had been spent on things people would never get to play, saying they are “down but not out.”
Major Restructurings Are Dominating the Industry in 2026
Unfortunately, layoffs and restructurings continue to dominate the discussion in the video game space in the first quarter of 2026. Epic Games, known for producing Fortnite, recently laid off more than 1,000 people and announced that it was ending support for several game modes in Fortnite later this year.
Microsoft recently saw Phil Spencer retire, and Sarah Bond announced her resignation. The Xbox side of the gaming industry is currently working to rebuild its brand strength.
Nintendo is reportedly scaling back production of the Nintendo Switch 2 due to lower-than-expected demand, and several live-service games are shutting down faster than ever, such as Highguard.
