It’s official: Destiny 2 is receiving its final expansion, Monument of Triumph, on June 9, 2026. After that, there will be no more content updates coming to the game, marking the end of an era for millions of fans across the world.
Of course, Destiny 2 wasn’t the beginning, with the story starting all the way back in 2014 with the original Destiny. Considering that it’s a franchise, and the second game is coming to a close, it’s natural to expect a third entry to follow up shortly afterwards, especially when you consider all of the loose ends and plot points still left to explore!
However, the reality of the situation is something else entirely. Here’s whether Bungie is developing Destiny 3, and what the future of Destiny looks like.
Is Destiny 3 In Development?

Despite the end of Destiny 2, it does not appear that Destiny 3 is in active production.
That news comes from Jason Schreier, who revealed in a Bloomberg report that Destiny 3 is not actively being worked on by the team over at Bungie. It’s led a lot to question why the sequel wasn’t immediately prioritised after the conclusion of The Final Shape, the expansion that put an end to the Light and Dark saga.

Well, as tends to often be the case in the industry, it all boils down to money. Destiny 3 would cost a fortune to develop, and it seems like Sony is sceptical about greenlighting the sequel amid challenging market conditions. So, don’t expect a Destiny 3 announcement at the upcoming State of Play, as it seems all but impossible.
What Is Bungie Working On Next?
That begs the question: if Bungie isn’t working on a Destiny 2 follow-up, what are they doing instead?
Well, priorities have been shifted internally towards Marathon, with many of the Destiny 2 team having been moved to work on the extraction shooter instead. Despite poor sales and player numbers, Bungie seems determined to stick by its latest release, at least for the near future.
Outside of Marathon, it’s been reported that staff are looking to pitch new projects, but nothing has been greenlit just yet. In fact, Bungie is planning for a batch of major layoffs, with numbers currently unclear. A dwindling team of developers continues to bode bad news for the future of the company, especially after they cost Sony a $765 million loss.
What’s Next For Destiny?
The future of Destiny has never looked so uncertain, and it’s impossible to definitively say what’s next for the franchise.
Everyone would have banked on Destiny 3 being the obvious future for Bungie, but with that seemingly on the ropes, it looks like we might have to wait years for more Destiny content.

Destiny 2 will remain playable with the final Monument of Triumphs expansion, and there’s always Destiny: Rising, the mobile game, if you’re desperate for a hit. However, when it comes to the Destiny experience that we’ve all grown to love, it’s difficult to say when something new will come our way.
Some of the projects being pitched at Bungie by staff members are Destiny adjacent, but even they’re not being given the green light. Until Bungie shares more about its upcoming slate of games, all we have is hope that Destiny will return sooner rather than later.
