The Destiny banner has been flying since 2014, with the franchise going through plenty of highs and lows across the years. For every The Final Shape, there was a Curse of Osiris, but there’s no denying that there’s just no other game out there quite like Destiny.
Well, that might hit especially hard now, as Bungie has recently announced its final live-service content update for Destiny 2, and it has a whole crowd of fans asking the same question: Is Destiny 2 shutting down?
It’d be the end of an incredible saga, but the future does seem set in stone. Here are all the details regarding the final expansion for Destiny 2, and whether the game is being shut down for good.
What Is Destiny 2’s Final Expansion?

Destiny 2’s final expansion is titled Monument of Triumph, and it’s set to be a celebration of everything players have loved about the franchise over the years.
Typically, Moments of Triumph would arrive annually and celebrate highlights from Destiny 2’s most recent chapter, but now it’s being elevated into its own expansion. The goal is to make it a welcoming place for players to return to, and there’s a ton of content arriving, including:
- Newly refreshed Director returns to the center of activities
- Pantheon 2.0 arrives as a permanent addition with a fresh slate of bosses
- All Raid and Dungeon loot has been revisited and updated
- Destinations have been refreshed with Distortions and updated loot
- A host of new abilities and reworks for some specific ones
- The Portal will be completely overhauled
- New crucible game modes
- An updated rewards pass tied to the Monument of Triumph
- Sparrow Racing League returns as a permanent addition
Of course, with this being the final Destiny 2 expansion, seasonal events will be retired. Weapon rewards from the likes of The Dawning and Guardian Games will be made available through engrams via a Monument of Triumph vendor.

It’s looking to be a real trip down memory lane, and it will hopefully be the most comprehensive Destiny 2 experience available. Of course, with no more left in the game’s sights, does this mean that Destiny 2 is shutting down?
Is Destiny 2 Shutting Down?
No, Destiny 2 will not be shutting down, and Bungie will ensure that the game remains fully playable.
Active development on the game will be concluding, but that doesn’t mean that Bungie is throwing Destiny 2 away. A huge part of the Monument of Triumph expansion is to ensure that the game remains a welcoming place for players to return to, even if new content is no longer on the horizon.

Even though the game may not be shutting down for good, it’s truly a sad time for any Destiny fan out there. Considering the fact that it’s been in people’s lives for upwards of 13 years, to see it come to an end is a genuinely bittersweet feeling. It will always be there to revisit, but it seems like the journey across the stars is coming to an end.
