On Tuesday, rumors began swirling about the possibility of a PlayStation Vita 2. However, it may not be the true Vita successor that fans could be getting from Sony.
UPDATE – A PlayStation VITA 2 isn’t on its way. But a new PlayStation handheld is. Check out our exclusive report here.
After seeing the rumors circulate, longtime journalist Jeff Grubb took to Twitter to put other some of what he’s heard about a new device. He gave the update in the middle of a trip to Super Nintendo World.
“I see the reports about a potential Vita 2, and I would definitely scope down those expectations,” he said. “I’ve only ever heard about a cloud-streaming handheld.”
Thinking of a “cloud-streaming handheld” would lead to the belief that the device would be similar to that of the Logitech G Cloud system. As far as traditional handhelds go, that seems to be the Steam Deck’s market right now with other companies trying to compete with Valve.
As far as what is coming from Sony, the company is working on a new model of the PlayStation 5. The newest model could be a long-anticipated PS5 Pro with a release in 2024. The company has also been working on a version of the PS5 with similar hardware, but would feature a detachable disc drive.
Sony has yet to make any statement about a new handheld device. Insider Gaming has reached out to SIE America representatives for comment on the PlayStation Vita 2 rumors.
