Helldivers 2 Has Sold 12 Million Units in 12 Weeks

Sony has announced during its financial report that Helldivers 2 has sold an impressive 12 million units in its first 12 weeks.

Helldivers 2 has been a tremendous success for developer Arrowhead Game Studios and its publisher, PlayStation. The figure makes Helldivers 2 one of PlayStation’s fastest-selling first-party games of all time, up there with God of War Ragnarok, which sold 11 million units in 10 weeks.

The impressive figure comes following controversy earlier this month, which saw Helldivers 2 get hundreds of thousands of negative Steam reviews due to a PSN linking policy — A policy which PlayStation later reversed.

It’s unclear how many of the game’s sales were attributed to PC, but with an all-time concurrent player peak of 458,709, it’s not hard to imagine it in the millions. As such, the success of the game puts a huge question mark on Sony’s future strategy with its first-party titles, with the success of the game suggesting that it could be a strategy replicated moving forward.

Microsoft is already seemingly on board with the strategy of releasing its first-party games on other platforms. While the company hasn’t confirmed any other releases past its original 4, it’s likely only a matter of time before more announcements come.

Just yesterday, Square Enix announced that it will move away from console exclusivity and will take a multi-platform approach.

Despite Helldivers 2’s success, though, the company saw a 29% year-over-year decrease in its hardware sales for the quarter, which could also imply a change in first-party strategy moving forward.
