The Coalition has explained that the reason behind server issues with Gears of War: E-Day was due to a DDoS attack, which led to intermittent disconnects, login issues, and widespread server disruptions.
Released fully last week, Gears of War: E-Day is the latest entry in The Coalition‘s beloved series, rolling back the clocks to the first days of the war against the Locust.
The title has scored well with critics and received acclaim from players, but there have been some criticisms, and the title has now been hit with a DDoS attack.
E-Day Servers Hit With DDoS Attacks
The official Gears of War community account on X confirmed the attack, posting: “Earlier today, some players experienced intermittent disconnects, login issues, or other service disruptions in Gears of War: E-Day. These issues were due to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting our online services.
“Our teams are continuing to monitor and mitigate this activity. We’ll provide updates if there are any significant changes. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
A DDoS attack is an attempt to crash or slow down a targeted service by flooding it with fake traffic from various sources at the same time, essentially pushing a server to its maximum, thus preventing real players from access, or resulting in server issues.
Those issues seem to have now been resolved, but it’s yet another indication of negative sentiment towards the title and toward XBOX overall, in what has been a turbulent year.
XBOX has seen a wealth of layoffs this year, with more still planned, and the company trails behind Nintendo and PlayStation in the console wars, facing continued questions about its exclusivity approach and Game Pass, among other things.
Gears has been included in that targeting, with criticism directed toward some of the new characters featured in E-Day.
