According to a new tweet from @HYPEX, @BeastFNCreative, and @SpushFNBR, a major collaboration between Fortnite and LEGO is expected to be released on December 7th. We also speculated about this LEGO crossover earlier this month.
A variety of unique gameplay features will be introduced. Players will play as a genuine LEGO character, while gameplay will be centred around mining and crafting. Here’s the full tweet with some lengthy details about movement, emotes, and more:
The newly revealed details have already drawn many comparisons to Minecraft. Fans quickly speculated this might have partly caused the recent Fortnite age restrictions.
LEGO is a highly flexible IP, but it often borrows from other major franchises for video game mechanics and narratives. It will be a relief to play as an actual LEGO figure, and the LEGO Stud Gun would be excellent fan service.
Although it’s a shame this collaboration has so many distinct Minecraft similarities, any Creative Mode would be appropriate. Fortnite is no stranger to building, and a Creative Mode with LEGO bricks should inspire the fans, nonetheless.
Also, LEGO always benefits most from freeform creativity. This aspect doesn’t normally appear in the video game medium, with rare exceptions like LEGO Worlds and LEGO Bricktales.
That sense of freedom will translate well in Fortnite, which has done an excellent job of promoting community creations. In fact, custom cameras and controls for the Unreal Editor for Fortnite tool recently leaked online.
Surprisingly, mining could also put players face-to-face with enemies. It’s unclear just what form these could take, but LEGO has a long history of memorable villains.
This will also be a cooperative experience since @HYPEX also mentions that there will be “sleep voting”, akin to Minecraft. LEGO always encourages players to have fun together, so that’s an appreciated touch.
