Former PlayStation Boss Shuhei Yoshida Unsure Losing Discs is A Big Issue

Ex-PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida has shared his two cents on the no-disc situation, saying that he doesn’t understand if it’s such a big issue.

The gaming community has been divided ever since Sony announced its plan to stop producing PlayStation discs in 2028. Various members of the community, including industry leaders and developers, have shared their opinions on both sides of the issue. Recently, the former head of PlayStation offered his thoughts on Sony’s decision.

Ex-PlayStation Boss Yoshida Admits He’s “Totally Digital”

During an interview with GamerBraves, Shuhei Yoshida was asked about PlayStation’s decision to move away from discs. Yoshida first revealed that he had no idea that this was being planned. He added that he is “totally a digital consumer” and doesn’t want to manage or swap discs. He would rather have all games on the dashboard, so he just clicks on them to play; hence, he is “completely digital”.

Yoshida does add that he understands some collectors have “walls full of physical packages,” and for those people, “it would be a shame if physical games were no longer available to collect.” At the same time, he feels that collectors will still be able to purchase physical packages with download vouchers once the discs stop.

Shuhei Yoshida also discussed the need for physical discs, stating that even with discs, developers “are constantly updating and adding game data anyway.” So even if a player has a physical version of the game, they “will still need to download new patches, DLC, or updates. So, not having a disc, I don’t understand if it’s such a big issue,” said Yoshida.

Yoshida revealed that “the digital price point can be anything. Publishers can choose whatever price they want for a digital game.” Yoshida also spoke about players who buy second-hand games, stating that for those players, the “lack of discs may become an issue.” But he went on to say that publishers will “run promotions and price discounts throughout the year” so players can wait for a sale to buy the titles at a lower price.
