EXCLUSIVE: Star Wars: Galactic Racer Dev Confident of Living Up to ‘Prestige’ of The Franchise

Star Wars: Galactic Racer creative director Kieran Crimmins is confident that the title will live up to the “prestige” of the iconic franchise.

The Fuse Games title acts as a spiritual successor to the iconic Nintendo 64 hit, which only adds to the pressure from fans, but there’s every reason for confidence that the latest title can live up to the lofty expectations.

Speaking exclusively to Insider Gaming at a preview event for the title, which releases October 6, Crimmins explained that past experience working with Lucasfilm eases the pressure, as it’s not an entirely new experience.

‘Something We Know a Lot About’

“There’s definitely a prestige to Star Wars games that you’ve got to live up to, a pedigree of really, really great games, but we’ve worked on Star Wars games before,” he explained, “In previous titles, we’ve worked with Lucasfilm, so even though there’s a lot of pressure there, it’s something we know a lot about.

“We definitely take seriously making something that we think fans are going to love, that feels authentically Star Wars, put we’ve got pedigree.”

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is releasing in what is an exciting period for gamers who want to experience adventures of the universe far, far away, with Star Wars: Zero Company releasing this month, the Jedi Survivor series going strong, and all eyes on the Knights of the Old Republic remake.

For Crimmins, however, it’s all about achieving his childhood dream of creating Galactic Racer, a title he’s spent decades thinking about creating.

“From my point of view, this is a game I’ve wanted to make for at least 20 years. I played the first one, it was one of my favorite games on the N64. I’ve made a lot of racing games in the past, and this is a game I’ve had in the back of my mind for a long, long time.

“To be able to make this game, starting a whole new studio, is kind of a dream come true. I think about it in those terms, I’m living my best life building a game I’ve always wanted to make.”

While there will be a sense of familiarity with some aspects of the game, Galactic Racer takes a bold approach, adopting a Roguelite system, which requires a new vehicle from scratch at the start of every run, and players will choose upgrades after each event.

With the upgrades not being permanent, it allows for more experimentation, and Crimmins believes it will scratch an itch with fans.

“Trying a new build, a new strategy, it’s something you don’t see in loads of racing games,” he said,” I love games that allow you to upgrade, I love upgrading my vehicle, but I always felt like I upgraded it once, and then I didn’t get to experiment with it.

“With this, we’ve widened the space that you’re able to experiement with, but also giving you a reason to start again every time. I think it makes for a much richer racing experience.”
