Final Fantasy’s Yoshinori Kitase Doesn’t Rule Out More Remakes

Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase said they’re “more likely” to invest in new games but didn’t rule out remakes.

The recent major titles from the Final Fantasy franchise include the FF7 Remake series, with “Revelation” being the next anticipated release. The last mainline installment was Final Fantasy 16, which was released in 2023. Now, it seems likely that new titles will be introduced for the franchise, but remakes are also on the horizon.

Final Fantasy Franchise ‘More Likely’ to Get New Titles, But Remakes Aren’t Out

In a recent interview with IGN, Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase discussed how the team is balancing the development of new intellectual properties and remakes. He stated that they are more inclined to invest in new titles and games. However, he noted that projects like Final Fantasy 7 hold special significance for him and many of the original creators who worked on it, which influences their approach to such remakes.

The team aimed to develop something innovative that connects to the original game, making it easier for new players to appreciate its appeal, much like long-time fans do. As a result, the company is not dismissing the possibility of remakes, especially in cases similar to Final Fantasy 7, where they would be open to investing in remaking certain games. There were rumors about a Final Fantasy 9 Remake some time ago, but development on it seems to have stalled since. Kitase also reveals that employees and a lot of fans have been asking for a remake of Final Fantasy 6, “so who knows”.

Interested readers can find Yoshinori Kitase’s full statement below:

I think that mainly we are more likely to invest in new titles and new games, but at the same time, for example, this time with the [Final Fantasy VII] remake, there was me and other creators who worked on the original game, which we had really strong feelings towards. And we really wanted to create something new related to the old game to allow new users to play and to know the appeal of this game as much as the old users who play the old game. So there might be different cases like this one where the company is willing to invest in remaking old projects and other kinds of games like it happened this time.
