A new claim reveals that Final Fantasy 9 Remake was far along in development before being put on ice.
There have been rumors about a Final Fantasy 9 remake circulating for the past few years. Initially, these rumors were sparked by teases from Square Enix and updates on the Final Fantasy 9 website. An insider later revealed that the game’s development might be stalled. Recently, another insider has offered further insight into the status of the remake.
Final Fantasy 9 Remake Was a Single Game and Far Along in Development According to New Claim
Recent claims regarding the development of the Final Fantasy 9 Remake have emerged from a ResetEra post by Alex Donaldson, also known as APZonerunner from VG247 (via r/GamingLeaksAndRumours). Donaldson mentions that there was indeed a Final Fantasy 9 Remake project, stating, “it was a single game, and it was very far along.” He also references Yoshi-P’s “vague comments” about the FF9 tribute content, which hinted at the remake. However, for reasons that have not been disclosed, the project has stalled and is no longer moving forward.
Donaldson also notes that nothing is finalized, highlighting that Square Enix’s latest mobile game, Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, was “effectively cancelled” for much of the year before being revived. Hence, if Square Enix does want to release the remake, the work is there for the team to get back to. The post also mentions that Square Enix aims to focus on new stories after completing the Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy, as working on remakes has led to diminishing returns.
