Final Fantasy 14 Director Denies FF9 Remake Involvement

During today’s Final Fantasy 14 letter from the producer live streaming event, director Naoki Yoshida denied any involvement in a Final Fantasy 9 remake.

Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P, had a translator present for the live event. It seems that machine translations during a previous interview from a Dawntrail tour may have caused confusion about plans for their next projects.

In today’s live event, Yoshida clarified via his translator that he is “not working on any sort of Final Fantasy 9 remake.”

However, Yoshida did call Final Fantasy 9 a “wonderful, wonderful title,” and quite hefty. Yoshida added that given the scope of the game, “we would have to be very careful and mindful if we were to handle Final Fantasy 9.”

The Final Fantasy 14 director also addressed comments that if Yoshida did take on an FF9 remake, they would make it an action game. Instead, Yoshida said that “whomever would handle it would probably make it turn-based,” and that they would do so to.

Final Fantasy 14 held an Open Beta for the Xbox version last February. The announcement mentioned that players will need an Xbox Game Pass to play the full Xbox Series X|S version.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail expansion will launch on July 2, 2024, and pre-orders are available now. Early access is scheduled to begin on June 28, 2024, at 2 am PDT.

  • Good FF16 was awful and it underperformed I assume he’s getting fired or he’s leaving Square after that mess of a game he made. Square needs to move on. I say get all hands on deck for Dragon Quest 12, Kingdom Hearts 4, and make a Dragon Quest 11 style remake of Chrono Trigger. I would recommend Parasite Eve remake but I don’t know how that would sell since they need bigger numbers.

  • After all the Final Fantasy failures they should finally focus on Kingdom Hearts. This guy made garbage so don’t give him anything anymore he sounds like he’s leaving the company. He got lucky with 14 but 16 was a flop and then Square followed with Rebirth which was another flop. Square needs to learn to deliver in the Kingdom Hearts franchise more frequently instead of these massive wait periods or they’ll lose another audience there should be 3-4 Kingdom Hearts games per generation not 0-1. If they were going to do this they should have made Nomura end it with 3.

  • Square should give all their big AAA titles to Nomura give us Versus XIII, Kingdom Hearts IV, Parasite Eve remake, and Verum Rex. Yoshi-P is not the man.
