Fallout 3 Remaster Should Fix Major “Constraints” of Original, Says Former Bethesda Dev

Bethesda shocked everyone by confirming the rumored Fallout 3 Remaster was in development. A key developer who worked on the original Fallout 3 is excited for the remaster and believes it can achieve Bethesda’s intended vision for the game.

Remakes and remasters can seem lazy, especially if the games are still fairly new; however, there’s nothing better than a classic you idolized in a different generation being completely revisited and reimagined, accentuating its qualities in every way.

The Fallout 3 Remaster should be a prime example of a legendary game that desperately needs a makeover.

Tech Limitations Hampered Fallout 3

In an interview through The Examined Game YouTube channel, Steven Lake spoke to former Bethesda developer Nate Purkeypile, who has over 20 years of successful experience in the video game industry, about multiple topics, including Fallout 3.

Purkeypile went from being a world and lighting artist on the main game, before moving up to a lead artist on ‘The Pitt DLC, before another promotion to co-designer and lead artist on Fallout 3’s Point Lookout expansion.

The interview moved on to the topic of Bethesda confirming that a Fallout 3 Remaster is in development, and explained why it should be great.

Purkeypile said:

“It’s confirmed now that they’re [Bethesda] doing a Fallout 3 Remaster, but I’m personally looking forward to that because we were super tech-constrained making Fallout 3, and you could only place so many lights, and again, textures are pretty small. Constantly worrying about the memory budget, or how much stuff you’re putting on screen.

So, it’s not like exactly how we intended, I get why people get more upset over movie remakes and stuff, but, in the case of games, particularly the art side of it, it’s 100% not what we intended and it was very, very constrained.”

He also added that Skyrim would be his next goal for a Bethesda remaster/remake: “That one I had a lot of fun working on, and I would definitely push to add more color to it.”

You only have to look at how gorgeous The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remaster from 2025 was to get an idea of what Fallout 3 could look like and how crisp and detailed it could look.

You can hear Nate’s thoughts about the Fallout 3 Remaster and his work on the OG from 3:57 onwards.
