Fable Has Reached a Playable State, Says Producer

The next Fable title has now reached a playable state, according to one of the game’s producers.

The new benchmark regarding the game’s progress was shared on LinkedIn by Playground Games producer Vijay Gill (as spotted by Twisted Voxel). The producer — who is leading production relating to the game’s “cross-discipline workstream consisting of Gameplay Design, Technical Design, Gameplay Animation, Engineering, VFX, SFX, UI and more” — updated their profile to list new details about their work on the game.

According to Gill’s experience section, his work includes “preparing and facilitating regular game playthroughs and build reviews with key stakeholders.”

While that doesn’t indicate that Fable will be arriving any time soon, it is a notable marker for the game’s progress at the studio. Fable was entirely absent from the recent Xbox & Bethesda developer conference which laid out details and release dates relating to the major Xbox releases like Redfall for the year ahead.

The last major title in the franchise to be released was Fable Anniversary, a 2014 re-release of the original game for Xbox 360 and PC. A further title, Fable Legends, was planned for Xbox One by then-series developer Lionhead Studios. However, the project was cancelled in 2016 and Lionhead was closed soon after.

Taking charge of the new entry in the series, Forza developer Playground games plans to use the studio’s own in-house engine, ForzaTech, to develop the game. Late in 2022, it was reported that Eidos Montreal had also been brought in to assist with development.

The action-RPG title was first announced during an Xbox Showcase in 2020, teasing a revival of Lionhead Studios’ beloved tongue-in-cheek fantasy world. Very little has been heard about the new Fable since, which will be published exclusively under Xbox Games Studios.

Fable is set to release for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
